News From the Sun Bow Front:

June 2011:

Dear friends and family,

Well, once again we braved the Anatolian plateau in search of the best Firin kebab..

And once again it was Ali Baba in Konya. Hands down the best of the best.

Summer in Turkey is filled with fresh, local fruits and vegetables. In addition, the fish was fabulous and the lamb was extra sweet. It was a wonderful time with friends, food, and great rugs and kilims.

Konya is still the place to see wonderful art textiles and the prices are super good - probably because buyers tend to stop at Istanbul and the Konya merchants are very motivated sellers.

This trip we also visited Sille, a village just outside Konya. It is an ancient site, dating to pre-Byzantine times. The emperor Constantine's mother was a devout Christian, and sponsored at least two churches in Sille (circa 315 AD, which later became important fixtures on the Pilgrimage Trail).

Still later, the Seljuk Turks (circa 1115 AD) built at least two mosques there, so one can easily see the movement of religion, in both location and architectural styles.

There were no rugs for sale, but we did have a wonderful lunch in an outdoor garden restaurant which served local dishes.

We have been told for many years that the supply is drying up, and this trip we saw the first real signs of this. There was less and less to pick from, although we did find two groups of rare and wonderful rugs: a small group of Marsh Arab kilims and a large group of Herke Kurd long tent rugs.

These Kurdish carpets were once common (in the 1970s and 80s), but have been gone from the market for over 20 years. We found a collection of 80 pieces which have been "sleeping" since then, and we were permitted to make a selection.

Wait until you see them, they are quintessentially tribal and nomadic.

We are awaiting word of the shipment of our latest treasures, and hope to have them in store within the month of June. Keep listening.

Also, we have started selecting pieces for our famous bargain pile for Old Fashioned Bargain Days. Look forward to seeing one of our largest bargain piles ever this July 14th, 15th, and 16th. More information to come shortly.
