The Hotemish Turkomans are one of the Seljuk invading groups who occupied the Byzantine Empire in the 11th and 12th centuries. Forty or so years ago, the Turkish government placed the Hotemish in their own village. We have visited the village, and some ladies still remember the good old days when they were nomads, and still made everything themselves.
This tulu is extra special in that it is the only example we've encountered in which the back of the piece was woven to look like a kilim. We still can't decide which side we like the best. You decide.
Materials used are mainly locks of un-spun Angora goat hair (which form the outer pattern) on hand-spun wool (which forms the revers kilim pattern). Makes your fabulous wall art reversible.
