Şameran is queen of the snakes and is a mythical creature predating Islam. She is a popular image in weaving and in other art forms such as glass painting. Her image is currently used as Nazarlik. For more information, see our January 2010 exhibition on the subject.
This particular example has the name of one of Turkeys major soccer clubs, Galatasaray, underneath Şameran. Perhaps the weaver was a fan.
