Şameran is queen of the snakes and is a mythical creature predating Islam. She is a popular image in weaving and in other art forms such as glass painting. Her image is currently used as Nazarlik. For more information, see our January 2010 exhibition on the subject.
For years I have heard that embroideries of her can be found in the Bergama and Balikisir regions of Western Turkey. Lucky us, after only three years of searching we found her. Italian silk on white cotton, this piece was so dirty when found that the details were almost unreadable. She cleaned up better than new.
